A family from China took ownership of a 2,700 sq ft dual-key residence at Pavilion Embassy Mayfair in Kuala Lumpur and asked A Trio Design for modern luxury without the clutter that usually comes with it: air-conditioning invisible, and character in every space rather than one finish repeated room to room. The project ran six months.
The Challenge: Luxury Without Ornament, Services Without Space
Luxury and modern pull in different directions. Push too far towards luxury and the interior turns heavy and traditional; stay too clean and it reads as plain. The air-conditioning request was technical: copper piping had already been provided and compressor space was limited. And giving each room a personality can easily leave a home looking like several unrelated projects under one roof.
Design Direction and Solutions
The approach
The response worked on three fronts at once: material palette, mechanical integration and a controlled use of accent colour. Running design, drawings and site coordination as one scope, the way the studio approaches interior design for KL condos, is what kept the ceiling design, the air-conditioning layout and the joinery aligned on site.
Marble and gold, used with restraint
Cabinetry was specified in modern, clean-cut colours with subtle gold detailing to lift the palette. Real marble stone was used rather than a printed imitation, so the surface carries actual depth and variation, and the selection was deliberately a white-based marble with minimal veining so the material adds richness without turning traditional. Fluted panels, glass, mirror and an off-white base tone balance the modern and luxurious sides of the brief.
Air conditioning designed into the ceiling
Daikin Home Central Air Conditioning was proposed for the whole residence. A slim-type grille was selected for each space and integrated into the plaster ceiling design, so the outlets read as part of the ceiling rather than as equipment added to it. Outside, a single Daikin VRV Home Series outdoor unit serves the indoor units throughout the home, removing the need for multiple compressors and freeing up the limited external space.
One design language, different accents
A consistent main wall colour and cabinet laminate palette runs through the residence so the spaces feel connected. Character then comes from accent colours in selected areas, such as orange at the foyer and dark blue in Bedroom 1. Each room gets its own identity while the home still reads as one concept.
Rethinking the dual-key layout
The owners chose to remove the separating door and convert the Studio Suite into a guest room, which lets guests use the whole suite comfortably and keeps the space connected to the main home, so they feel welcomed into the residence rather than parked in a separate unit.
The dining area and the wet kitchen door
Dining received the most design attention. Feature marble was combined with modern elements for a clean but luxurious effect, and a concealed door in fluted panelling hides the entrance to the wet kitchen so it blends into the surrounding interior instead of interrupting it.
The Result
The completed residence delivers the luxurious yet modern character the owners described. Dining became one of their favourite spaces, largely because the marble selected there has a unique pattern and strong character that gives the room a distinctive focal point.
